‘myrkviðr’ is an electroacoustic piece of music for 7.1.4 surround sound and visuals, premiered at the 2024 Senzoku Electroacoustic Music Concert.

“myrkviðr” (an Old Norse word meaning "dark forest") poses the idea of living sound, a barely perceptible yet somewhat physical sonic presence that inhabits our space but doesn’t adhere to many of our laws of physics. The work presents a narrative hinting at lore that potentially spans centuries, about a wooded area that is audible and visible but ever-shifting.

Hard to discern by sight - and hard to rely on film documentation, as all records of its existence inexplicably deteriorate - we train our ears on the sounds of the myrkviðr: its tranquil birdcall, the breathy creaks and whispers of its countless trees and their leaves, and the beings that scuttle through its undergrowth; it seems to sing to us like some strange orchestra, and as we find ourselves drawn in by its odd beauty we realize we have been swallowed whole - we become the myrkvidr, leaving nothing of ourselves behind but memories and myth.

「myrkviðr」は、私たちと同じ空間に生息しながらも物理法則に従わない、かろうじて見える、しかしいくらか物理的な音の存在としての「生きている音」という着想をもとにしている音響作品である。

この作品では、聞こえるし見えるが形が常に移り変わる森林地域をコンセプトとした、何世紀にもわたる伝承のような物語が展開される。 視覚では判別しづらく、その存在に関するあらゆる記録が不可解なまでに劣化しているため映像記録に頼ることも難しいが、私たちは「ミュルクヴィズ」（古代ノルド語において「暗い森」の意）の音に耳を傾けることができる。

静かな鳥のさえずり、無数の木々やその葉の呼吸するようなきしみやささやき声、そして下草の間をうろつく生き物たちの音がまるで奇妙なオーケストラのように私たちに歌いかけてくる。そしてその異様な美しさに引き込まれていくうちに、私たちは自分が丸ごと森に飲み込まれていることに気づき、記憶と神話しか残すことなく自分自身が「ミュルクヴィズ」たるものになる。
